SOUTHPORT SHARKS
DATE: 2007 | LOCATION: Southport, QLD
The Southport Sharks is one of Queensland’s largest sporting clubs, and one of Queensland’s largest Australian Rules football clubs. Situated at the corner of Olson Avenue and Musgrave Street Southport, The club has gone through numerous renovations and additions over the past years. Shane Denman Architect was approached by the builders to take the existing concept designs by M.P.S, Architects and redesign to fulfil the clients brief as a design and construction package. During the redesign process, the entry lobby was enlarged and a high-level entry canopy was added to mark the main entry point.
This also gave more protection to patrons both entering the main building and the function centre. The new entry lobby features sculptured plasterboard ceilings and large Led light panels above an aquarium with sharks, rays and exotic fish species. The redesign incorporated a new sports bar, a beer garden with a firewater feature, a new reception area, a bottle shop, a food hall, a kids room and a coffee shop.
A large covered suspended concrete deck was added to the eastern side of the club, which is split into two areas, one for external dining and entertainment and the other divided by a glazed screen and plants. This area is used as a Designated Smoking Area (DOSA). The entry to the function rooms was upgraded, with a large covered suspended concrete deck area, which is used for external breakout area and DOSA.
The existing undercroft area was filled in and made into a gym with full height glazing overlooking the playing field. The car parking was also extended and the entry point moved to enable an easier and direct entry for vehicles, to both the club and the new gym. The client has commented that they and the patrons are very happy with the end result.
